Nestled within the vibrant landscapes of Maui, Hawaii, Haleakalā National Park stands as a testament to the island's rich natural beauty and cultural significance. My daughter Ella, her service dog, Herc, my son Luca, and two friends from Portland decided to brave the 13.2 mile hike. Did we have enough food and water? Would our bodies hold up? Would we hike fast enough or would we end up hiking in the dark?
The Early Ascent:
Our journey begins midday, which was quite late, providing for some challenges as we were chasing daylight and hoping to get to the summit before sundown. Many visitors choose to make the pilgrimage to the summit for sunrise, a spiritual experience that bathes the landscape in hues of orange and pink as the sun emerges above the clouds. We had experienced that beautiful landscape at sunrise, so this trip was solely about hiking.
Unique Flora and Fauna:
As we descend into the crater, the stark contrast of the volcanic landscape becomes apparent. The rusty hues of the cinder cones and barren terrain create an otherworldly atmosphere. Despite the seemingly desolate appearance, the park is home to unique flora and fauna adapted to the harsh conditions. Keep an eye out for the silversword plant, a rare and striking species found only on Haleakalā.

The silversword, or ʻāhinahina in Hawaiian, is a botanical marvel that graces the volcanic slopes of Haleakalā.
